We often treat empty space as a problem to solve. An open evening becomes an invitation. A quiet weekend becomes a list. Slowly, the margin disappears and everything important is asked to compete with everything merely available.

Making room does not require escaping your responsibilities. It begins with a smaller question: what deserves to remain unhurried? A conversation, a morning walk, a meal cooked without looking at the clock—these are modest things, but they give a day its shape.

Protect the margin

Try leaving one pocket of time unnamed this week. Do not optimise it in advance. Let it become what the day needs: rest, thought, company or nothing at all.

A little space can make the rest of life feel more vivid. What matters is rarely asking us to move faster. More often, it is waiting for enough quiet to be noticed.
